My experience after two weeks with the ZTE Axon Ultra 5G

The ZTE Axon 30 Ultra It is a high-end smartphone. It comes with three 64 megapixel cameras, a refresh rate for the panel of 144 Hz and fast charging of 65 W. The brain that the manufacturer has chosen is also not far behind. The Axon 30 Ultra includes the Snapdragon 888, one of the latest Qualcomm processors. Is it worth your purchase? In this article I give you my opinions after using it for a few weeks so that you can answer that question yourself.

Design and construction materials to match

I begin by treating an important aspect: design and construction materials. And I anticipate that the work done is good. The materials convey a premium, good-quality feel. The side buttons stay firmly in place and do not dance. The set looks solid and personally I find the chosen design elegant, especially in the color of the unit I have received.

I must, on the contrary, express the disappointment that the camera module stick out so much. Regardless of whether you choose to carry the phone without a case or with it, using it on a table means living with a constant dance, mainly when playing in the upper left corner. Another negative point, always from my point of view, is that display sides have curvature. This is a purely aesthetic element, devoid of a real application in the use of the phone. The curved edges cause ghost touches that impoverish the user experience. And, in my opinion, they do not beautify too much either.

Multimedia aspects stand out thanks to its screen and speakers

Including a few good multimedia attributes is a safe bet. ZTE seems to have it clear and that is why it has made sure that the Axon 30 Ultra comes with a good panel. I have come across a sharp display, with a brightness more than enough to use the phone outdoors and with a 144Hz maximum refresh rate. In reference to this last detail, I must clarify that, by default, this specification is handled automatically by the operating system.

It is the phone itself that decides when the refresh rate should be increased and when it should be decreased. To change this parameter, I have gone to the settings and I have set this value to my preferred option. It is only fair that I explain that the refresh rate has a multitude of modes. If you decide to adjust the refresh rate, you can choose between automatic mode or fixed modes of 60, 90, 120 and 144 Hz.

There are other things you should know about the screen of this ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G. On the one hand, it has resolution FullHD +. This results in about 2,400 x 1,080 pixels. In addition, it has a color depth of 10 bits and offers a way to avoid eye strain. The aspect ratio is 20: 9 and it is capable of display 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

In the previous two paragraphs I have confirmed that ZTE has been effective in looking for a good multimedia experience. But I’ve only told you about the screen. Now I focus on the sound. Obviously, I do not mean to claim that this phone has Hi-fi speakers. However, it does include the possibility of listen to music in stereo thanks to an upper and a lower speaker. Also, the maximum volume is really high. When I started playing the first song, it immediately caught my attention. So I wanted to test the behavior of your listening system with different styles of music. The result? Music at a forceful volume level, in stereo and without distortion.

Performance assured with the Snapdragon 888

ZTE has not considered applying cuts in an aspect as important as the processor. Comes with the Snapdragon 888, one of the most powerful offered by Qualcomm. Obviously, I have been able to notice how the brain of the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra 5G has been at the height at all times. Only occasionally have I noticed some lag when performing actions in applications like WhatsApp. All in all, I am sure that these occasional drops in performance are caused by poor software optimization.

With this Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 comes the GPU Adreno 660. If you are one of those users who like to play with the smartphone, the new ZTE flagship will more than deliver. Also, the Chinese company has decided to add two important hardware elements to achieve a greater fluidity sensation. To his powerful brain we must add the UFS 3.1 storage and LPDDR5 type RAM. The unit that I have tested is the one with 128 GB of internal memory and 8 GB of RAM. By the way, if you are considering the purchase of this model, I advise you to carefully evaluate your needs when saving data, because memory cannot be expanded with microSD cards.

In this section my conclusions are clear: this is a phone that can do anything. Its hardware and the tests I have carried out prove it. The small bugs that I have found should be fixed with an update by the company.

The photographic set: useful and with three 64-megapixel sensors

Of the four rear sensors that includes the new ZTE model there are three that come with 64 megapixels. This differs from the tactics employed by other manufacturers, which offer many megapixels on the main sensor to the detriment of the rest. But this is not the case with the Axon 30 Ultra. In the following list you can see the details of each lens, including the model and manufacturer:

  • 64MP Main Lens (Sony IMX686 / OIS / F1.6)
  • 64MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens (Samsung GW3 / 120 ° Angle / Ultra Low Distortion / F2.2)
  • 64MP Portrait Lens (Samsung GW3 / F1.9)
  • 8MP Telephoto with Periscope (OIS / 5x Optical Zoom / 60x Hybrid Zoom),
  • Laser focus sensor

As indicated, all sensors except the telephoto lens have 64 MP. The results that I have found are satisfactory. They are photographs with a correct level of detail and with some real colors. Therefore, it is not a phone that takes photos with excessively saturated colors. Rather, the shots obtained are realistic. At least it has been like that with the 1x and the 0.5x sensor. In the case of the 2x, I have not been able to do checks for a failure to focus. I have contacted ZTE to see if it is a test unit error or a software problem.

The icing on the cake is the 16-megapixel front camera. It is also practical to include a 5x sensor, although in this case it is 8 megapixels.

In conclusion, the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra comes with a very useful and practical set of cameras. I can say that all the objectives comply with the premise of adding value to the user. In no case are they there to fill. The results are good and are on par with the rest of the components of the phone.

Before closing this section, allow me to mention the night mode. As you may have observed in the attached photographs, the results obtained are really positive. It is difficult to find noise in them and they have good lighting. Of course, for best results it is recommended to use a tripod or stabilizer.

MyOS with Android 11: some points to improve

How could it be otherwise, the Axon 30 Ultra comes with Android 11. The manufacturer’s layer has been called MyOS. As you will see in the screenshots that I attach in this section, ZTE includes some applications about which they did not ask me. This is a polite way of saying yes, that the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra also comes with bloatware.

Fortunately, this is not difficult to remove, as most of the pre-installed applications are outside the system and can be uninstalled. As is usual in the Android world, in addition to the Facebook clients or the WPS office suite, there are some duplicate utilities. For instance, ZTE includes two web browsers.

ZTE’s customization layer has other pending points to improve. I am referring to the design of the icons, inconsistent with other elements such as folders. Or some translations into Spanish, like the “Start again” that appears instead of “Restart”. And I have even had problems when starting multitasking and placing one application next to the other. Yes, if you like Discover from Google, you are in luck. The ZTE App Launcher includes it on the first page starting from the left.

Price and opinion about the ZTE Axon 30 Ultra

East ZTE Axon 30 Ultra It has left a good taste in my mouth. It has a beautiful design, some very interesting multimedia specifications and a photographic set to get a lot out of it. In addition, the chosen hardware ensures good operation for many years. It is true that I have missed some extras, such as wireless charging or the inclusion of a 3.5 mm jack. However, I think that it is justly compensated with other details, such as the remarkable on-screen fingerprint reader, effective facial recognition, compatibility with Wifi 6 or the 65W fast charge. 750 euros for the version I have tested. If you opt for the model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, the price rises to 850 euros.
